Cuneiform Rec.Mats / Morgan Band : Thanks for flying with us (S,2005)****

Multi-instrumentalist, but mostly known as a drummer, Mats Morgan, shows with his compositional qualities clever layers of compositional melodical-rhythmical interactions, typical for a talented composer who thinks like a drummer. His main influence is Frank Zappa with whom he has many references (-Mats did numerous Zappa related projects-). Also his, intelligent, keyboard work definitely has this Zappa touch, but perhaps his complete vision has also developed from interests in other groups like Kaipa (-he played with them at one time-), or Von Zamla (- I recognise different funny open compositions comparable to the still more strict Zappaesque way of thinking) or Univers Zero (whom he greatly admires). The one time I heard him playing harmonica it reminded me of Belgian Toots Tielemans, a very different touch again, while Zappa into a Canterbury like sphere remains the main basis.
Also the live bonus tracks are interesting to check out.

Transubstans Rec.Siena Root : Far From The Sun (S,2008)***'

After years being on the road, it is obvious that this would change the group’s sound. On this new release they often sound less studio arranged, and with a new element of a more raw and direct vivid live energy, so that they often sound almost exactly like one of the experienced (progressive) bluesrock bands from the 70s, who used to rock & jam with their own songs. At times this way they are comparable to early Led Zeppelin between the first and second album, when they were rooted in blues and had a developing rock in mind at the same time. Guitars, bass and drums are dominating, even when you can trace elements of flute, a sitar part, and organ. Just the last track takes a bit more time for a calmer organ & mellotron participation.

Oresund Space Collective is a group of Danish, Swedish, American musicians that shared time to make improvised space jams. The group had occasional members from Danish bands Mantric Muse and Gas Giant and Swedish groups Carpet Knights and Sgt.Sunshine. The group used to have more than 20 hours of material available on mp3 for download on their website for their fans. This is their first official collection, and is a kind of best of.

There is some variation, from sequenced rhythmic synthesizer loops, to slow improvised jams, partly led by guitars and drum rhythms, with Ozric like bass or space dub reggae rhythmic influence.

In general all improvisations have very much the same elements like an ever going to infinite borderless directions, towards space and beyond. Also, the improvisations are so relaxed and moody often these spacey jams are almost like “ambient” space psychedelia.

Mellotronen Rec.Charlie & Esdor (S,1970-1971,re.2006)**°'

This is the collected works of Charlie and Esdor, or from what is saved from their recordings.

Charlie and Esdor had started as a hippie psych duo on sitar and guitar, drums and bass, soon became a quartet (with an extra lead and rhythm guitarist, Tobben and Esdor). This version must have been powerful, playing a one hour version of “Tomorrow Never Comes” (Beatles) and some Hendrix tracks on their first and only gig, which left a tremendous influence on the duo, but the two other members preferred to go their own way as another duo. Later on a festival they played as a trio (intended as a quartet) just once more. The label contact of still fresh progressive label MNW, Bo Anders Larsson, gave the duo several chances for recording sessions.
Their first single, which are the first two tracks of this compilation are powerful heavy ragarock tracks (with all instruments played by the duo), and shows for me a great side of the group.
While recording an LP, intended as one side in Swedish and one in English, they also recorded two single-tracks as a re-establishment of Bo’s former project, Scorpion, with a B-side, called “fuck the cops” (whose title was changed by the label management, because they preferred not to be too controversial). These are the two following tracks on the compilation. The style is very different from the previous single, with the B-side at its most raw and heavy, is bluesy rock.
At this time, Swedish progressive rock was on the rise, and to maintain their own identity in the scene English seemed no longer to be accepted, so the duo had to rewrite the whole b-side of the upcoming album into Swedish, which they did. Still they couldn’t find the inner “message” of the group or label it so properly and decided after a long year of waiting only to release a mini-LP, with 3 tracks from the LP and a live version (as a trio), which are the following tracks on the compilation. The style especially on the first two tracks of this session has some loose guitar jamming and sounds as if it has a somewhat improvised energy (“Green is beautiful”,). The sitar is very much mixed to the far background and all focus is on the freaky electric guitar and hippie-psych rhythm on “Bridge for two blues”. “Idag Sticker jag Bort” I think I like best from this session. It becomes really freaky and somewhat experimental near the end, with some psychedelic effect. Because the original intended LP was not going to be released they went to the studio to get the tapes, but they seemed to have been lost. The saved tracks might only have given a slight idea of the intended album. We miss now for instance an 11 minute track of “How does it feel to be without friends”, a track which the group still had from a 1970 performance (played as a duo on guitar, sitar only).
The two radio performances the group once did for national radio were not kept by the radio and the only left over tape from the second session was stolen in a car burglary. More attempts were done by the group the following years but they were not all successful because of more sad circumstances, until they parted to go their own, different ways.

The compilation gives some idea of the range of interests from the group, from disciplined arrangements of sitarrock (first two tracks), to raw rock (the Scorpion tracks) to somewhat loose jams with an improvised feeling and possibility, with bluesy hard rock guitars, and with a psychedelic effect, which could eventually lead to inventive and unique moments. The group had bad luck when we talk about storing some of their best moments, but now have all the luck they can have for Mellotronen always make the best compilation a group could dream of, with a 32 page booklet with info and rare pictures.

Nasoni Rec.Siena Root : Kaleidoscope (S,2006)****'

On the first track the Led Zeppelin influence again is obvious. This progressive hard rock style is not just a copy (even if they take a rhythmical riff from LZ somewhere), but the original thing, in the true spirit of the 70's, with a complexity, a spontaeity, compositional strength and a hard rocking vibe.
The female vocalist has all the best qualities of one of a '70's power-female soulrock vocalists (Julie Driscoll,...).
If this wasn't enough, the fourth track, "Bhairavi Dhun" is a terrific psychedelic / progressive sitar (and Indian flute) crossover ragarock track, with an exhalariting pulse. "Crossing the stratosphere" is a track that starts like a weird semi-acoustic filmic experiment with echoing percussion and electronica until it pulls the listener back in into more guitar driven rock and hardrock, (with a huge mix of influences of famous guitarists and groups, it's perhaps not necessary to mention). Here some organ takes the lead too.
After two more female vocal driven rocking tracks, the last longer track, "Reverberations" stars as a lead improvisation between organ and flute, but the whole band participates. If one really wants, also here trivial melodic assiciations with some '70's progrock can be found, but it stands again very much on its own. Near the end some clarinets makes the improvisation as a middle eastern melody for the snake in the cascet-goes-mad. Terrific.

This release exceeded all my already big expectations for the group. Most of it has all the qualities of a future classic, which proves that the seventies can still be much alive now. A great album, and one of the most promising new bands.

Nasoni Rec.Siena Root : Mountain Songs (S,2005)***/****

For me these two tracks show a group with a definite and convincing early 70’s sound. The female heavy soulful rocksinger with group, has a kind of inner progressing direction and drive of power roots derived from bluesrock, comparable to a group like Led Zeppelin, but then with a female singer, and with a more straight forward hard-rocking drive, with its own rhythmical variations on "Mountain I", and with a strong soul-hardrock energy on "Mountain II". The single is a teaser for what can be expected on the group’s next (second) release. Promising !

Record HeavenMr.Brown : Mellan Tre ögon med... (S,1977)****

Around 1977, the time of a public’s change of interest because of the over-intellectualised complexity of some of the more known bands (ELP,..), a few bands had began to develop an expression of a true art form. In this heritage where nothing more had to be proven, Mr.Brown delivered a private LP with qualities of a controlled and relaxed development, which held the middle between only a very small focus on the progressive pop album, with much more symphonic capacities, without an intellectual goal, and some improvised parts, partly with additional Hammond organ, sax and guitars.
Some of the improvised evolutions clearly heard are a taste from the cream from groups like Caravan, while the soft focus could recall a group like Camel. Often is also mentioned the Dutch band Focus. Also one could eventually recognise some mid period Pink Floyd organ just in the beginning.
Many of the tracks are with slow, seemingly half composed, half improvised touchstone descriptive, rather romantic, piano which could have shown a different way or episode for a post 1977 Genesis symphonic music afterlife (-just imagine how some of the softer Italian bands like early Celeste, or Errata Corridge or perhaps also Banco learned their own Genesis lesson-). Some melodic flute and nice emotions in electric guitars or soft vocals finishes off this largest part, to their own kind expression, with its own level of beauty, which alone makes it a classic album and a welcome reissue.

Mellotronen Rec.Mikael Ramel : 3:e Skivan (S,rec.1976->1977,rei.2006)**°

I heard the first album of Mikael Ramel before, which seemed to be basically a singer-songwriting album with some backing.
This album is also mostly song oriented, with one instrumental. Around the same time of the recording of his second album Ramel seemed to have appeared as singer and guitarist on the second Fläsket Brinner album, “Fläsket” (1972). -Fläsket Brinner were one of the most interesting Swedish slightly jazzrock bands from that time.-
For this third album, after some 5 years gap without new albums, Mikael recorded this album in between a years span of recording sessions. Therefore he had the contribution of some very good musicians (13 in total), of which a few are jazzrock players.
On most of the tracks they accompany exactly what the songs need. There are only here and there more creative parts, on a few free moments in the songs, or with some arrangements, like the great vocal part of Monica Zetterlund on “Sägodrömmen”, or the wonderful acoustic guitar arrangements by Mikael and Lasse Englund on “Lanad gitarr”, or the analogue synths by Mikael with the funny rhythmic inventions by Bengt Dalen on “Gurus att Anamma”, or the flute contributions from Flasket Brinner’s Sten Bergman on “Plocka Blommor”, or the chamber orchestra on “Strax Dax”. Only “Fäbodrock” is an instrumental. Also here analogue synths and all kinds of different guitar arrangements are very cleverly composed in this track, which has for me, a folk melody association. The first few tracks of the album are mostly song orientated, with a rock band, while the second half has more sparse and very effective more acoustic arrangements.

The five bonus tracks makes this collection more complete and even more interesting -in a natural way-, of which “I min Suit” is another instrumental, and there also are three good English versions of songs from his first two albums, and the last, perfectly-concluding-the-concept track, is once more sung by the talented voice of Monica Zetterlund, a different version from the last track of the album, (which was also sung by her) which is here with a string quartet orchestration.

A well done reissue by the label in cooperation with Mikael, which makes the original LP more interesting thanks to the well fitting bonus tracks and a thick booklet with some additional info, rare pictures, and with a mini-poster of the original LP drawing.

Transubstans Rec.Skyron Orchestra : Situations (S,2006)*°

While the label introduced singer Veronica Lostjärna at the early stage of Skyron as "an answer to Grace Slick", this influence can’t be noticed any more, or it must have been a reference like an antidote of a punk band. With more or less shouting and distorted vocals (female mostly or male and or dual vocals) with organ (sometimes Rhodes piano) and often new spacepsych bass/electric guitars this is a different energy, sounding more like an improvised underground rock band with some spacepsych ambitions.

From the 14 tracks many of them keep the rock element rather simple. The lullaby like lyric lines and singing and rock song element actually more disturbs me than it pleases. The hardly- moving-hand-but-with-with-playful fingers organ (balancing between melancholy and simple happiness) reminds a bit of early Green On Red, and is the nicest element on the album for me, working well with the band sound. On “My World Salvation” for instance the organist created in combination with the guitars (and rhythms) a psychedelic trip. The group surely is capable of going into these ambitious areas and the sound the band makes is enjoyable. The vocals however, -even when on “Smiling Surface” the distortion is taken out of the vocals-, in combination with another fundament of the group, a rather punkrock edged easiness, are still a bit too far away from a musical adventure. Partly disappointing, partly pleasing.

Transsubstance Rec.  First Band From Outer Space :
Impressionable Sounds of the Subsonic (S,2006)***'

For being the first band from outer space they must have studied our species well, for this is not really the average spacerock band. The whole album listens as one very varied piece into different sections, from trippy Floydian keyboards with Ozric bass and with a great variety of flutes (including pan flutes !!) on the opener “Novaja Zemlja”, over to much more rocking variation on the next few tracks, from a more ballad tension to mostly harder rock, with Tull like tensions, and even one acoustic track, “To Be Seen As The Underdog”, in a very complete range of strong expressions.
On the last few tracks the space invader message cools down, the space ship closes and after starting the engine of more heavy and freaky spacerock with ambient spacesounds, it finally calmly disappears the same way as how it landed.

A nice welcome change of a bit more variety for a band that started with its associations within the spacerock territory.

Transubstans Rec.       Drahk Von Trip : Heart and Consequence (S,rec.2005)***'

The group has various elements that make a strong sound. Basically here are worked out rock songs with progressive detail. The female vocalist has a strong, expressive voice. The bass/rhythm if needed can be have a real drive (already a bit with some moody repetition on “One of a kind”, or on “In a world of trouble”). The songs are pleasant and with a certain emotional activity. Some tracks aren’t specifically progressive rock in the old sense, but for me everything is convincing enough.

Drahk Von Trip is Göran: stunts and percussion, physical suffering, Susanne: lead vocals, violin, flutes, melodic wavering, Mats: rhythm, lead and 12 string guitars, noisy devises & backing vocals, Ralph: caterpillar bass & smoke rings, Twodox: yidaki, didjeribone, vintage synthesizers, udu, tambura, percussion, & field recordings, Micke: rhythm, lead, space & glissando guitars, theremin sounds.

-Unfortunately the artwork for the CD for me is not showing the best taste, which I'm sure will lead to less buyers. I wish they had used the more appealing original photo instead or asked the photographer to finish it for the cover, or had invited a real graphic artist to finish the product instead of leaving it to a hobbyist. The group deserves better.-

Transubstans Rec.         Gösta Berlings Saga: Tid är Ljud (S,2006)****°

When I first listened to this album I thought for sure this was a reissue from ‘70’s, but seemingly this is a new band...

The embryonic history of the band started with a duo consisting of Alex & David back in 2000 (drums and organ). Their 3-track, made under the name "Pelikaan" seemed not to have brought them much further, so in 2004 they added the more experimenting bass player Gabbe and finally Mathias on guitar to the line-up.

The name of the band refers to a famous book by Selma Lagerlöf. (1891), a book which resulted in a successful movie in 1924, a Swedish masterpiece of silent film, a melodrama of the Expressionist era, considered as Sweden's "Gone With the Wind", and with a still unknown Greta Garbo. I believe there also exists an opera and a musical under that same name. They took their name because everybody remembered that name although most of the young generation did not read the book. Alex : “The people who know the book still think the name suits us as the novel contains many moving stories about many interesting characters, just like our music does.

The band recorded a 7-song demo in 2005, printed 100 of them to promote the band, which lead to a contract with Record Heaven for this official debut. Mathias left the band after the recording and is now replaced by Einar, an influence which now also leads to darker and more dissonant passages.

The first couple of tracks are intelligent Symphonic rock with Fender-Rhodes, electronic keyboards, organ, mellotron, with great rhythmic complexity, a melodic catchiness with intelligent melodic and rhythmic evolutions, clever in combining sounds of the instruments and a feeling that the tracks are known so well, they feel rather improvised. In other words, this is progressive symphonic rock how it should be. A few structures used later on are almost symphonic-classical in design with parts that are far from any straight forwardness ; never the less the band always succeeds in having in a fluid and fluent style.
From the third track on, real improvisations are also added, from progressive rock with some jazz flavour, in the ‘70’s Swedish tradition of rock improvisation, but also with a minimalist rock part, on “Tog du med dig naturen?” with a violin that goes wilder and a bit of keyboard improvisation. On “Knölsvanen” also Anglagard comes a bit in mind. Some composition, like “Svarta Hal och Elljusspar” use intelligent harmonies in combination with equally clever rhythmic evolutions, always with an attention how to harmonise and combine the sounds and melodies of the instruments well.

The album is much recommended and is a true winner that like good wine gets more depth and taste with each listen. It also is a very good entry for those who still believe that good progressive rock was only done in the ‘70’s. Amongst the better Swedish albums from the last 10 years.

Transubstans  Oresund Space Collective : Good Planets Are Hard To Find (S,2009)***°

The first few tracks of this new album convinced me really well. Perhaps it is also partly due to the mixing by Steve Hayes (Secret Saucer) in how these tracks build up perfectly. The opener, title track, is led by sitar, in an almost raga mode of improvisation, with smooth bass, spacey keyboards sounds lining in with this fundament, with additional sequenced high note synthesizers and then electric guitars melting with it before the bass and guitars speed up the trance. This flows perfectly into a rockier psychedelic jam, tuned in and then jamming further like a perfectly oiled motor speeding up further, with a clean energy. Only after some time, on the third track already, some portion of inspiration turns onto automatic pilot and mood a bit, and a keyboard improvisation is provided on top. A rather Ozric Tentacles vibe then turns up. Often are noticed talented technical drumming. This isn’t the end yet, because the next big part sounds more like stretched like a stoned jam, jamming towards the edges of the space available on this CD, and while returning to its moodiness, in essence you could call this part a faster more psychedelic trance dub (without real dub effects). Last big flash returns to the sitar. This new section is like a huge trance jam also suitable for dancefloor psychedelic moods, especially rewarding for around this time some wahwah funky effects on guitar.
