REVIEWS OF PROGRESSIVE MUSIC OUTSIDE INDONESIA WITH GAMELAN :

Gamelan X, 9 on Bali

Earthville Records                        Gamelan X : Satu (US,2007)****°

For some years I tried to locate gamelan-inspired groups from all over the world. No doubt that for me, one of the most impressive new groups with Gamelan is Gamelan X, also because they have all the capacities to increase the gamelan’s sound and expressive possibilities with other, like Western, instruments and approaches, and this also, Live, into a spectacular stage form with dance and visual spectacle with choreography, with crowd interaction. The style is often in rather classical way/talent composed but there are also more jazzy brass arrangements which are combined with chamber-rock like arrangements (violin, drums,..), -in a way this should interest Rock In Opposition/Zappa (?) listeners-, with also a bit of Balkan elements (trumpet mostly), contemporary classical elements (operatic vocal touches), as well as small touches of other world cultures (small elements, completely adapted into melodies and in rhythmical references), increasing the spirit that creativity hardly has borders when it is structurally inspired. The group is also part of Earthville/CreatioNation, an organisation which invites altruistic artists and compassionate creators into their "CitizenShip" as a way of “pledging your allegiance to the creative and compassionate world we're all building together”, a feeling which fits well. While an important core is the gamelan, it is not necessarily always dominating, on the foreground or used to lead. The inspiration is always balanced completely and has not one moment it does not keep the things vivid and inspired. Recommended !

CropCircleCollective             9 On Bali : Sanur (US,2007)**°

I am always interested when people try an ambitious task like combining Balinese ideas or instruments with other styles. In this case the gamelan is reinvented by all sorts of gongs, pots and pans and perhaps samples, and is combined with progressive rock, and even pop. Pat Hamilton, Jim Molina, Dan Susnara, Dan Sweigert and Dan VanSchindel tried this, with guest Jah Lowman, on a 26 minute track on their newest album. As a trio this wasn’t their first attempt. The track starts in a really convincing way. But except for the really great gamelan-bit in the beginning for the biggest part the whole composition is not so complex as it seems (and as it started, perfectly), but it is everywhere stuffed to rationally with arrangements, mostly with melodic neo-symphonic ideas. After the great introduction it quickly brings in a song approach which much more sounds like a pop/rock song. The singing here spoils it a bit, because the voice sounds slightly like Mayo Thompson, which is strange for a progressive rock concept, and this while singing pop-like as well. The piano and plenty of guitars tend to make it up, and make evolutions to rather symphonic moves in order to keep the progressive format convincing. This approach becomes neo-prog like, and for me cannot fully lift out well enough their own uniqueness, inventiveness and ambition.
