Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium. 3rd week of Nov,2003

1. Intro : some dark poetic moments
2. Subject : Great Horror Soundtracks (not just plain orchestral !).

1. Small intro, part 1, dark poetic music :

I browsed all darker releases I have from the eighties and early nineties to see what I still appreciate. I guess the Das Ich piano pieces I still like a lot. They're from a dark gothic poetic nature. I still find them very expressive :

* Danse Macabre Das Ich : Die Propheten (D,1991)**°°
Tr.8, "Frevel" 8 min

I keep this release mostly for one track, "Frevel". Surely this last track, with mostly piano (+ some orchestrations) and gothic vocals I still like a lot after all those years. This beautiful track which come close in style to early Goethes Erben.

* Danse MacabreDas Ich : Satanische Verse (D,1991)***°'
Tr.4, "Jericho" 5 min 13

"Jericho" is another piano (+ some arrangements) with poetry track, from this gothic mostly early electro wave band. A similar fantastic track. I can still appreciate this album.

I once made very interesting concepts (going very deep into the psychology of the content) about works from Goethes Erben & Sopor Aeternus. Goethes Erben trilogy (and couple of related tracks) is also very interesting from a dark psychology view and its poetic expression of it. Also lots of Sopor Aeternus work until a few years is very interesting from a psychological view how to deal seriously with the concept of suicide, and loss by death of a close friend. The subjects from those groups are taken seriously, and are therefore different from groups who more take a pose in the fashion Gothic can be. Although I prefer not to use it now, I will always keep it, may be one day I'll use it again.

The 2 associated groups which I will not airplay this time, but it's interesting to mention ! :

Goethes Erben (Gothic poetry on music) :
Intro : http://www.deutschmusikland.com/bands/goetheserben.html
Official page : http://www.goetheserben.de/
Other page : http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Maison/6890/goethes.html
A track from trilogy I played before in my earlier conceptual radioshow, one of the best tracks from "Die Traum an die Erinnerung" (= the dream of memory) I used is "Das Schwarze Wesen" :
More fragments : http://www.goetheserben.de/index.php?action=hproben
Sopor Aeternus official website : http://www.soporaeternus.de/
3 very different soundfragment I used before to give an idea of better tracks :
From 1st album ("Ich tote mich jedesmahl..")
From "The inexperienced spiral traveller.."
I once wrote a review of this album for a folk magazine. Afterwards they were angry at me saying this wasn't folk but gothic. I acclaimed then this is folk as well, as a kind of  alternative to the woollen socks "folk and only traditional folk" freaks, but I must admit I shouldn't have done that.
From Death Lover's Sarabande (face 1) : track
A shame I didn't have enough airplay time for some of these, but the persons who read the newsletter and check the playlists get a few fitting extras.

2. Part 2 : interesting Horror movie soundtracks :
Coil, Art Zoyd, Popol Vuh, Libra, Frizzi, Nicolai, Sorgini, Frizzi, Goblin

(Starting with some more "gothic" like interpretations, until progressive rock). It took me some years to get these soundtracks together, so here they are.

* Solar Lodge R.Coil : the unreleased themes for Hellraiser (UK,1987)****
Tr.1, "The Hellraiser theme" 4 min
Tr.2, "The Hellbound heart" 3 min
Tr.3, "Box Theme" 3 min
Tr.6, "Main title" 3 min 13 26

Wonderful filmmusic possibly still fitting perfectly with the movie, but at the end it was not used for it. I With inventive keyboards. At the new soundtrack, the finally used box theme in the movie is still worth to hear and compair. This has a wonderful cover.  Seen from close it's a picture of an angel.  Seen from far, it's a face of death. Great mini CD.

* Atonal Rec.Art Zoyd : Haxan (B/F,1991)***
Tr.3, "Haxan F" 6 min (fragment max. 2 min) 2 min
Tr.5, Haxan ?" 5 min 7 33

Somewhat Gothic at moments, sometimes R.I.O.-styled & contemporary music styled. This movie is from 1921, by B.Christensen (Sweden). The pictures in booklet from the movie are powerful, in expressionist style.

* Atonal Rec. Art Zoyd : Faust (B/F,1995)***°'
Tr.3, "Flask" (Zab.) 3 min
Tr.8, "Pact" (Zab.) 4 min
Tr.9, "Bruissement" (Hourb.) 4 min
Tr.10, "Essaim" (Hourb.) 2 min
Tr.12, "Gates of Darkness 2" (Zab.) 5 min 20 53

Dark composed filmmusic. Sometimes powerful and unique. May be the most consistent of all three releases I have, have heard from this group. I really like the fantastic expressionist photography of the movie. It was much better than more simplistic movies like the more popular Frankenstein.

* Atonal Rec.Art Zoyd : Nosferatu (B/F,1989)***°°
Tr.1, "Loeuf du serpent" (Hourb.) 4 min 57

First track is incredible ! Electronic. And dark, with brooding power. Everybody knows this movie is one of the best ever, also thanks to the talent of the actor and the powerful photography & ideas.

* Spalax Rec.Popol Vuh : ( "on a way to a little way ") Nosferatu (D,1978)
Tr.5, 5 min
Tr.7, 3 min 8 65

Unique group Popol Vuh (under lead of Florian Fricke) who's music I admire a lot (think I have all his releases now except the first). Interpretation of loneliness of this interpretation of Nosferatu, by Werner Herzog. Surely the tracks with moog ? are really horror movie like, but, like all his music in a meditative way. Rest of the track is in a more typical Popol Vuh style, here often with sitar. I once did a full radioshow on Popol Vuh's complete career. Best starters (and all must haves) : "Tantric Songs" & "Hosianna Mantra" (both combinations of Indian and Christian themes), "Einsj臠er & Siebenj臠er" (with band), "Florian Fricke" (perfect compilation), "Sei Still wisse ich bin" (impressive versions with choir). Popol Vuh was one of the first to make real, pure and integer "New Age music" before the genre existed. His music is very unique in its kind. Popol Vuh created in fact a genre on its own.

* Pickup RecordsLibra : Schock (I,1977)**ー
Tr.11, "Il fantisma  suona il piano" 2 min
Tr.13, "Tema di Marco" 2 min
Tr.5, "La Cantina" + "The Schock" 5 min 9 74

Fine group that hold is progressive but not necessarily working within this genre. I have 3 albums by them, all working fine. Never a must, but always enjoyable. This album comes close to usual movie 70's rock music but goes in the direction of Goblin as well, very different from the other two Libra releases I know. A few fragments are more original as usual, like the 5th track with the more powerful main theme. Libra's drummer was also Goblin's drummer at the same time. It is considered as another Goblin related soundtrack.

* Cinevox rec.Goblin : Profondo Rosso (= "deep red") (I,1975)****°
(Tr.2,  "Profondo Rosso (LP version)" 4 min)
Tr.24, "School at Night 'lullaby version)" 3 min
Tr.25, "Deep Shadows (LP version)" (zipped audio) 6 min
Tr.27, "Profondo Rosso (remix version)" 6 min
Tr.28, "Profondo Rosso" original sound effect 4 min 19 (except two last minutes) 143

This was the first LP by Goblin.

PS. I once did a complete radioshow on Goblin. Other albums which I can recommend too in order of preference (I still miss some albums) : "La Via Della Droga" (lots of percussion, a bit different in style, -it's not a horror movie,
but a gangster movie-, great 70's movie rock ; hear a soundfile from it here : ), & "Patrick" (a consistent album with the various styles of Goblin together ; see further down).  Still good enough, in a more independent progressive style are "Il Fantastico Viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark", and "Roller", which is just a band's progrock record without any movie association.

Tr.12, "Ai margini della folia (alternate take)" 2 min
Tr.17, "Zombi" (voices) 3 min 5 148

This is better than Phenomena, but still far away from the classics. I prefer the bonus tracks, especially the zombie's voices.

Tr.3, "Reopening the sighs" 1 min
Tr.4, "Sighs" 6 min
Tr.6, "Black Forest" 6 min 20 126
(+ few seconds of track 7)

I have the first reissue. The second contained bonus material from the movie. There's not much like this. It made me instantly a fan of Goblin. One of my top 20 albums of all times. Fantastic bass player & keyboard player, & a good drummer,..! Second soundtrack from Goblin, but their third record.
